Top: Leadoff man Lance Jones reaches on an infield single. Kramer Robertson made a nice play on his chopper, but Jones showed off some nice wheels to beat the play easily ... Marcus Tomlin bunts him over to 2nd ... Jose DeLaTorre moves him to third with a grounder to Bregman ... Bregman makes a really nice play on D.J. Wallace's chopper up the middle to end the inning. 0 runs, 1 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 0

Bottom: Fraley walks ... Sciambra flies out to LF ... Fraley steals second base and the catcher's throw goes into CF. Fraley gets up from his slide and heads toward third, but loses his footing about 10 feet from the bag. As the throw was coming in, he low crawled to the bag and just beat the tag ... Alex Bregman fouls off about five pitches before driving a 3-2 offering into CF to score Fraley. Southern's center fielder was playing too shallow and it got behind him, allowing Bregman to scoot into second for a double ... Tyler Moore singles sharply into RF, but it's too sharp to score Bregman ... Robertson scores Bregman on a squeeze bunt, but is out at first ... Cade Stone grounds out to first to end the inning. 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 2

Top: Brian Rowry rips a single into RF to lead off the second ... Kramer Robertson can't make a play on a hard shot to second. Had a chance, but the ump screened him and the ball bounced off his glove after a diving attempt. Ball rolls into CF for a single ... Sean Washington strikes out ...  Robinson Mateo hits one in the hole. Bregman makes a really nice backhand stab, but spins to throw to 2nd and try for the double play, but Robertson had no chance to make the turn. His momentum was carrying him to third, and in another situation you might've wanted to see him try for the lead runner ... It doesn't matter anyway as Morton grounds out to Zardon.  0 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base Southern 0, LSU 2

Bottom: Chris Chinea leads off by flying out to LF ... Jarret DeHart picks up the first XBH of his career when he crushed a double into the RF corner. Can't hit it much harder than he did ... Zardon walks ... Fraley keeps making good things happen. Rips a double down the 1B line to score DeHart. He's hit safely in every game where he's had a plate appearance ... Sciambra flies out to LF ... Bregman walks to load the bases ... Tyler Moore flies out to RF to end the threat. 1 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 3 left on base Southern 0, LSU 3

Top: Alden Cartwright comes on for Jared Poche, who is still eligible for the win because LSU announced before the game it would use a minimum of three pitchers ... Chris Sciambra makes an excellent catch in foul territory to lead off the 3rd, leaning over the rolled up tarp to snag the ball near the wall. Just as high of a degree of difficulty as reaching into the stands ... Tomlin ropes a single past a diving Robertson at second ... Cartwright spins a nice two-strike curveball past a frozen DeLa Torre for strike three ... D.J. Wallace strikes out swinging to end the inning. 0 runs, 1 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 3

Bottom: Kramer Robertson flies out to RF ... Cade Stone flies out to CF ... Chinea flew out to 1B. 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 0 left on base Southern 0, LSU 3

Top: Rowry strikes out ... Wiltz flies out to RF ... Gavin Webster (who entered as a defensive replacement for Sean Washington in B3) is hit by a pitch ... Mateo strikes out swinging. That'll probably be it for Cartwright, with Henri Faucheux warming in the 'pen. 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 3

Bottom: DeHart flies out to CF ... Zardon walks ... Fraley lays down a sac bunt and is thrown out at first. Questionable call that Mainieri argues, since the catcher fielded the bunt in the batter's box ... Chris Sciambra drives Zardon home with a single through the right side of the infield, then takes second on the throw to the plate ... Bregman walks and that'll be it for Southern's starting pitcher May. New pitcher is 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 0 left on base Southern 0, LSU 4

Top: Henri Faucheux is the new pitcher for LSU. Cartwright struck out a season-high four batters ... Morton flies out to CF ... Jones walks ... Tomlin flew out to first ... Faucheux caught Jones leaving first early and catches him stealing 1-3-4 to end the frame.  0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 0 left on base Southern 0, LSU 4

Bottom: Kramer Robertson reaches on a throwing error from the third baseman. Kid made a nice play on a high chopper, but his throw took the first baseman off the bag ... LSU hits and runs perfectly, with Cade Stone hitting it right where the shortstop was before he left to cover the bag. The ball keeps rolling into the LCF gap, and Robertson wheels around to score from 1st ... Chinea flies out to LF ... DeHart strikes out swinging ... Zardon singles through the left side, Stone holds at 3rd ... Jake Fraley singles up the middle to score Stone. It's ridiculous what Fraley has done in such a small sample size this year ... Sciambra ends a nine-pitch at bat with a walk to load the bases for Bregman ... That's it for Myles. New pitcher is RHP Sam May ... May's first pitch is a wild one, scoring Zardon ... Bregman flies out to LF. 3 runs, 3 hits, 1 errors, 0 left on base Southern 0, LSU 7

Top: A few defensive changes for LSU. Bregman comes out for Conner Hale. Hale goes to second and Robertson goes to short. Chinea comes out for Dakota Dean. Dean goes to first and Tyler Moore moves to catcher ... Robertson immediately gets tested at SS and a short hop eats him alive ... Wallace flies out to CF ... Rowry singles when his bunt somehow stayed fair ... Wiltz advances the runners with a groundout to 1B ... Webster grounds out to the catcher to end the inning. 0 runs, 1 hits, 1 errors, 0 left on base Southern 0, LSU 7

Bottom: Moore walks ... Robertson hits one back up the box. It's slowed down by Southern's pitcher and allows the shortstop to make a nice double play turn ... Stone reaches on an  error by the third baseman ... Dakota Dean strikes out swinging. 0 runs, 0 hits, 1 errors, 0 left on base Southern 0, LSU 7

Top: New LSU pitcher is Hunter Devall. Faucheux's final line: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 1BB ... Mateo leads off with a single ... He's caught stealing second. Nice throw by Tyler Moore ... Morton grounds out to Robertson ... Lance Jones singles up the middle ... Tomlin flies out to second to end the inning. 0 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 7

Bottom: New pitcher is James Fontenot. Sam May went 1.1 innings, walked one and struck out another ... DeHart hits one deep into a stiff wind in LF for a leadoff triple. Southern's left fielder almost made a running catch, but he fell in the act of making the catch and the ball popped out of his glove ... Fontenot walked Zardon, and ball four was a wild pitch that scored DeHart ... Fraley proves he's human and flies out to RF ... Sciambra flew out to CF ... Hale flew out to RF. 1 runs, 1 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 8

Top: DeLa Torre flew out to Moore behind the plate ... Wallace flew out to RF ... Rowry singled to RF ... Wiltz strikes out swinging. 0 runs, 1 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 8

Bottom: Moore grounds out to SS ... Kramer Robertson doubles down the LF line ... Cade Stone flies out to LF ... Dakota Dean strikes out swinging.  0 runs, 1 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base Southern 0, LSU 8

Top: Nate Fury coming on to pitch the 9th. Hunter Devall worked two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one ... Fury goes 1-2-3 in the ninth to mercifully end this thing. 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 0 left on base Southern 0, LSU 9

FINAL: LSU (16-2) 9, Southern 0 (2-9), winning pitcher Jared Poche (4-0)

PREGAME -- We're back in action from a windy Alex Box Stadium as No. 8 LSU (15-2) looks to get its last tune-up before a big-time Southeastern Conference showdown in Nashville this weekend against No. 7 Vanderbilt.

Well, LSU as a team is getting a tune-up, but not most of its usual starters.

LSU coach Paul Mainieri gave the majority of his regulars the day off for the 6:30 tilt against Southern (2-8). The only everyday player who's not getting a rest you can probably guess (hint: It rhymes with Ralex Schmegman). After the first four hitters in the lineup, it almost looked like Mainieri just tossed a dart at names on a dartboard and penciled him in the lineup. You'll see what I mean in a minute.

Freshman pitcher Jared Poche is getting the start on the hill, but will only go two innings. After that, we're likely to see a Johnny Allstaff performance from some of the pitchers that haven't been used as much this year. I expect to see guys like Hunter Devall, Henri Faucheaux and Alden Cartwright tonight.

That's about all I've got to report before the game. It's a really nice day out here, but there is a stiff wind blowing in from left-center. I hate watching games in a closed press box, but my notebook might blow away if I opened my window.

By the way, the game is televised on CST tonight and will be broadcast on 98.1 FM.

On to the lineups.
