Duop Reath scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but a shorthanded LSU squad couldn’t get enough stops to overcome a poor shooting night, falling 84-74 to Tulane in New Orleans on Tuesday night in an exhibition matchup.
Tulane outshot the Tigers 54 percent to 36, as LSU managed just 4-of-24 shooting from beyond the arc. Will Wade’s troops did grab 19 offensive rebounds to Tulane’s 2 and outscored the Green Wave 42 to 34 in the paint, but Tulane’s bench bested LSU’s 30 to 7.
“I thought we played hard,” Wade said after the game. “We just didn’t play as smart as we needed to play. Every time we could get it close, we [had] some big-time defensive breakdowns. Our defense has to be better. Our rebounding was pretty good, but we have to be able to defend better.”
LSU was without senior forwards Aaron Epps and Jeremy Combs, both limited by foot injuries. Skylar Mays chipped in 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, knocking down 2-of-5 from deep. Fellow Baton Rouge native Wayde Sims started at the 4 and posted a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) and led the team with three assists.
“I think we’re going to have some great film to understand what we’ve got to do a little more,” Reath said. “We came out with the right mindset, we’ve just got to play a little smarter.”
Jordan Cornish and Cameron Reynolds led Tulane with 17 points and 9 rebounds each.
“Obviously we didn’t shoot it very well tonight,” Wade said. “That’s what happens when you’re reliant on jump shots.”
The Tigers open the 2017-18 season on Nov. 10 against Alcorn State at home.
