LSU began bowl practice without two starting linebackers.
Edge rusher Arden Key and inside linebacker Donnie Alexander were absent as LSU returned to the practice field Tuesday. The Tigers worked indoors without pads to begin preparation ahead of taking on Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.
LSU coach Ed Orgeron said last week that he expected Key to play in the bowl game, but the preseason All-American’s status remains unclear. He’s a projected first-round draft pick should he declare and missed the final two games of the regular season with a knee injury. He underwent surgery for an unrelated finger injury last month.
Arden is questionable,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said after practice. “He hasn’t come around like I thought he was going to come around. He’s questionable right now. He’s not practicing. And he’s questionable, and that’s all I know about it.”
The Tigers did begin practice with their full complement of offensive linemen. K.J. Malone and Garrett Brumfield both participated Tuesday. Malone, who hasn’t played since October after a knee injury, worked without any brace on his knee. Brumfield suffered a stinger in the regular-season finale against Texas A&M.
Running back Derrius Guice also practiced, as expected. Guice took to twitter last week to affirm his intention to play in the Citrus Bowl amid speculation he may sit out and prepare for the NFL Draft.
“It means a lot. That’s who he is,” Orgeron said of Guice. “Derrius loves football, loved every day he walked into this room. I’ve never seen him down. He wants to finish strong. I’m sure he’s motivated. A 10-win season would mean a lot to him.”
