LSU is shaking up its staff with just outside of a month to go before Opening Night.
Paul Mainieri is elevating underrate assistant and former Tiger Sean Ochinko to the volunteer assistant/hitting coach while Micah Gibbs assumes a new title: Director of Player Development, a source confirmed to Tiger Rag. The news was first reported by Kendall Rodgers of D1Baseball.com.
Mainieri did not confirm or deny the report: “I can’t comment on any staff changes until we go through the proper process with human resources,” the coach said in a text message to Tiger Rag. “As soon as anything is official, we will release it publicly.”
The move isn’t a reflection of dissatisfaction in Gibbs’ first year as hitting coach, but rather out of necessity. The former LSU catcher suffered a serious knee injury playing pickup basketball and needs time to heel in an off-the-field role. Mainieri confirmed Gibbs suffered a knee injury that will require surgery.
Ochinko served as LSU’s undergraduate assistant and coached first base last season. He was a catcher and first baseman during his three-year collegiate career from 2007-09, hitting .333 with nine home runs and 57 RBI during LSU’s 2009 National Championship season.
