LSU center fielder Zach Watson was a late scratch from the LSU lineup after he “tweaked” his oblique during batting practice prior to the Tigers’ 14-6 win against UNO, LSU coach Paul Mainieri said.
It’s unclear if Watson will be available when LSU opens up a series against Texas on Friday night.
“During batting practice he kind of tweaked his oblique muscle,” the coach said. “He’s had a little trouble with it in the past, and I didn’t even realize he’d done it until batting practice was over, so we had to make a late scratch there.”
Watson’s absence caused a shuffle of the LSU outfield, at least for Wednesday night. Antoine Duplantis moved to center field while Beau Jordan played right field. Austin Bain was a late addition to the lineup as a designated hitter and drove in a pair of runs.
The news comes one day after LSU learned shortstop Josh Smith would miss at least a month after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his vertebrate.
“Not having (Watson) and not having Smith breaks your heart,” Mainieri said, “and you hate to see kids get injured, but I’m just proud of the next-man-up attitude and the guys that stepped in there did a tremendous job for us tonight.”
