Top QB target Grant Gunnell gets sneak peak of LSU’s new offense at Football Caravan stop in Houston

HOUSTON — A 6-foot-6 teenager stood out — literally and figuratively — from the older, purple-and-gold clad crowd as the LSU Football Caravan made its stop in Houston on Wednesday afternoon.

Grant Gunnell, LSU’s top 2019 quarterback target, watched and listened as new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger broke down scrimmage footage and let out some of the mystery about the up-tempo, pass-happy attack he’s installing.

“It was pretty cool,” Gunnell told reporters on his way out of the crowded ballroom. “I got to see the offense, how they’re working with receivers and throwing the ball around.”

LSU coach Ed Orgeron and his staff are spending the week dispersed around the country on the recruiting trail. In this case, Orgeron and Ensminger were pulling double duty as the speaking engagement served as a unique opportunity to pitch on of their top 2019 targets.

The Houston native made his way to the J.W. Marriott Hotel during his lunch break at St. Pious X High School. He planned to talk to the coaches about what he’d seen and learn more after the luncheon concluded.

“It was a little weird (being the youngest person in the room), but he was cool to see them talk,” Gunnell said. “I hadn’t seen the offense yet, so it was good to see what was new.”

Gunnell hasn’t tipped his hand in terms of a new leader since de-committing from Texas A&M back in February. He’s taken a previous visit to LSU and is planning to be back on campus again sometime soon.

“It’s open,” Gunnell said. “I’m not really focused on any schools. I’m just looking at everywhere.”

There’s presently no timeline for a commitment, but Gunnell said he’d like to come to a decision sometime this summer before his senior season begins.

The consensus top-100 prospect is rated as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He’s thrown for 126 touchdowns against 17 interceptions during his sophomore and junior seasons.
