Anyone that followed LSU this season saw Daniel Cabrera blossom into one of the feared young hitters in the Southeastern Conference, and now the national accolades are starting to roll in.
Cabrera has been named a Freshman All-American by two outlets in recent days, first Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and now by the National College Baseball Writers Association.
The Baton Rouge native hit .315 this season with eight home runs, 18 doubles, two triples and 54 RBI. He ranked fifth in the SEC in RBI and sixth in doubles, earning SEC All-Freshman honors in the process.
Statistically speaking, Cabrera’s season ranks among the most productive put together by any LSU player — let alone a freshman — since the NCAA legislated that teams adopt the BBCOR bats prior to the 2011 season.
One of the key metrics in sabermetrics is a stat known as Runs Created. It’s basically an attempt to quantify batting average or on-base percentage while accounting for extra-base hits.
Here’s the formula: (Hits + Walks) X Total Bases/(At-bats + Walks)
Dating back to 2011, Cabrera put together the seventh best season by any player with 200+ at-bats and the ninth best by any player with at least 100 at-bats. The best season recorded was by Mikie Mahtook during his junior season (2011) and the only better freshman year was Alex Bregman’s in 2012.
