Fall Camp Report: Day One

Had William Shakespeare been there, he could have written a sonnet in ode to the first picturesque deep ball Joe Burrow uncorked in front of a large media contingent as LSU hit the practice field for the first time on Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately Shakespeare has been dead for centuries, so you’ll just have to take this reporter’s word that it was indeed a dime delivered by the Ohio State transfer.

Burrow looked sharp in his debut as LSU opened fall camp, although with the usual qualifier attached that he was throwing against air. He certainly looks the part and was accurate throwing the football during the 25-minute period of individual drills made open to the media.

Saturday marked the first day of the four-way quarterback competition between Burrow, Myles Brennan, Lowell Narcisse and Justin McMillan. The latter was present and participating one day after his graduation, as LSU coach Ed Orgeron said he would be the day prior. In fact McMillan took the first handoff rep that reporters were present for.

There will be plenty of time to further dissect the quarterback battle as it unfolds in the days and weeks ahead — particularly once there’s some statistics or live reps to be evaluated. Let’s get into some of the other noteworthy observations from day one.

PERSONNEL NUGGETS

  • Suspended guard Ed Ingram wasn’t listed on the updated 110-man roster distributed before the start of practice, indicating he will not participate at all in fall camp, as Orgeron said the day before.
  • Absent: Thaddeus Moss (attending his father Randy’s Hall-of-Fame induction), Jamal Pettigrew (knee injury), Cam Wire (lingering injury from high school)
  • Jacob Phillips was running alongside Devin White when the inside linebackers were doing individual drills, indicating he’s the leader in the battle to start. Tyler Taylor and Patrick Queen went next.
  • Both Kristian Fulton and Kelvin Joseph were working with the cornerbacks during individual drills. Orgeron said Friday that both players would stay put until a final decision is reached regarding Fulton’s NCAA appeal next week.
  • The first three defensive linemen to go through individual drills were Breiden Fehoko, Rashard Lawrence and Glen Logan, who’re presently in line to start. Ed Alexander was a full participant despite knee injuries that have plagued him since the fall, but his status will be worth monitoring once LSU puts on the pads in a few days.
