Fall Camp Report, Day 4

Rain forced LSU back indoors for day four, as players remained in shoulder pads and helmets for the 25 minutes of media availability during individual drills.

Some general obersvations from a relatively benign half-hour:

Ja’Marr Chase appeared to be the only non-quarterback in a gold non-contact jersey, but the freshman showed no signs of injury running routes.

Before the throwing session, Jerry Sullivan and Mickey Joseph split the wide receivers into two groups. Joseph told us earlier in the summer they will at times split the unit into inside receivers and outside receivers. I don’t know if that’s the case here, or which group would be which if it were, but here were the splits.

Ja’Marr Chase in yellow. Also, receivers are split between Jerry Sullivan and Mickey Joseph. Perhaps into outside and inside guys thought I don’t know that.

Sullivan has: Giles, Jefferson, Marshall, Chase, Anderson, Sullivan, Dillon, Jones

Joseph has: Davis, McMath, Jenkins

Sullivan continues to harp on the finer points of footwork in and out of breaks with his players, and Joseph worked on getting off jams at the line of scrimmage.

The timing of the passing game impressed me. Sure, it was on air, but quarterbacks were releasing the balls before receivers finished their breaks and making accurate throws. I only counted one dropped pass.

Elsewhere on offense, we finally saw some fullback/H-back sets for the first time this fall. Tory Carter, David Ducre, and a couple of walk-ons repped that position.

We’ve yet to see the offensive line in a five-man grouping, but based on pairings during blocking drills, it appears Adrian Magee is leading the battle at right tackle. If I had to wager a a guess, the line would look like this:

LT: Charles/Traore

LG: Brumfield/Hines

C: Cushenberry/Smith

RG: Lewis/Campbell

RT: Magee/Deculus

Ed Orgeron has stated he may move Brumfield to center and the second string right tackle to left guard if Cushenberry doesn’t hold firm to the center job.

Finally, a small note from the running backs, who were working with all-time LSU leading rusher Kevin Faulk today. Seems like a pretty decent guy to learn a thing or two from.
