As the first students began to pour out onto the field at Tiger Stadium, LSU safety Ed Paris could be seen on video inviting more fans to join and offering to pay the fine.
Well, time for somebody in purple and gold to break out the old checkbook.
The Southeastern Conference on Monday fined LSU $100,000 for violating the league’s rule against fans coming onto the competition area. The fine is steep because this is LSU’s second offense under the current policy. Fans last rushed the field following a win over Ole Miss in 2014.
“SEC schools unanimously approved the policy which requires fines to be applied when spectators enter the playing field after a game,” reads an official release put out by the league office. “The policy states that ‘access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy’.”
A third violation of the policy would cost LSU $250,000, according to the league. LSU will host Mississippi State this Saturday night with No. 1 Alabama coming to town two weeks after that.
