As of Tuesday morning, Ed Orgeron was doubtful that ailing left guard Garrett Brumfield would be able to get back in the lineup before LSU plays Alabama next Saturday night.
Two practices and five speaking opportunities for Orgeron later, the outlook is a bit more optimistic.
Orgeron said that Brumfield could potentially be healthy enough to play against Alabama after “surprisingly” practicing each of the past two days. The coach estimated Brumfield was at 60 percent health to begin the week, but he’s apparently looked good at practice.
“He could play,” Orgeron said on his call-in radio show Wednesday night.
LSU will hold its annual Tiger Bowl practice Thursday — underclassmen scrimmage with older players serving as the coaches — before taking the weekend off for the open date. Brumfield’s status will remain a wait-and-see determination through practice next week.
True freshman Chasen Hines has handled the lion’s share of the work at left guard since Brumfield went down with a knee injury. Adrian Magee and Donavaughn Campbell have made starts there as well, but Orgeron has praised Hines’ effort aside from a handful of freshman mistakes.

– On recruiting, Orgeron said LSU has “one of the best running backs in the country committed to us already,” referring to Tyrion Davis of Southern Lab. He added that LSU wants to sign two-to-three backs in the 2019 cycle.

– LSU’s players have the weekend off for the open date. Orgeron said he’ll be going to watch his son Cody play for McNeese State on Saturday. Cody was recently named starting quarterback.
