For two years Devin White has arguably been the best linebacker in all of college football.
Now he’s got some hardware to show for it.
White on Tuesday received the 2018 Dick Butkus Award, which is given annually to the best linebacker in the nation. The trophy was presented to White in the Lawton Room at Tiger Stadium by Matt Butkus, son of the legendary linebacker whom the award is named after.
In doing so White became the first LSU player ever to win the Butkus Award. He’s the first Tiger to win a national award of this stature since Odell Beckham Jr. took home the Paul Hornung Award in 2013.
“Congratulations to Devin White on winning the Butkus Award,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron wrote in a congratulatory tweet. “What a great player and teammate. Devin is a fantastic example of hard work and dedication and a great LSU Tiger!”
The other finalists for the award were Josh Allen (Kentucky), Devin Bush (Michigan), Tre Lamar (Clemson) and Dylan Moses (Alabama), but White beat them out to claim the honor. Earlier this week White was voted First Team All-SEC again by both the media and league coaches.
This season, White ranks second in the SEC in total tackles with 115 and his 12.0 tackles for loss stands No. 10 in the league. White is only the seventh player in LSU history to record 100 tackles in consecutive seasons.
A projected top-10 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, White announced on Monday that he would play for LSU in the Fiesta Bowl against UCF.
