LSU senior guard Daryl Edwards’ season is officially over as head coach Will Wade confirmed a report Thursday, saying he had surgery earlier in the day.
Wade said that Edwards will apply for a Medical Hardship Waiver, which would allow him to either come back to the Tigers or transfer to play for another school with another year of eligibility.
“Daryl had surgery today on his foot, so he’ll be out for the rest of the season,” Wade said. “Hopefully he’ll be able to get a medical redshirt.
“He had the surgery early this morning, and indications are things went well. We’re hoping that the recovery will go well. This was the right move for him. He’ll be able to function well, and function without (as much) pain.”
Wade was wary to get specific about the injury, stating he’s “not a doctor,” but he did convey that it was an injury that could lead to a much more severe injury.
“What happened to Kevin Ware could happen to him,” Wade said.
Ware, a former guard at Louisville, suffered an infamously gruesome leg injury when he broke his leg against Duke in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA tournament.
Edwards has appeared in nine games, averaging 4.4 points, 1.1 assist and 1.6 rebounds per game while clocking 17.1 minutes per appearance.
Wade said they limited him to nine games with the the possibility of getting him Medical Hardship Waiver in mind. A player can must play fewer than 30 percent of his team’s games in order to be eligible. With 31 games on the schedule, the nine games put him at 29 percent of games played in.
