LSU guard Tremont Waters put together a career performance to keep the Tigers afloat until the rest of the team got going in a 72-57 victory against Texas A&M on Wednesday night.
Waters scored a season-high 36 and made a career-high six 3-pointers to lift the No. 19 Tigers (17-3, 7-0 Southeastern Conference) to what turned into a convincing victory against the Aggies (8-11, 1-6).
The Tigers have now won 10 straight games and they remain one of just two teams undefeated in SEC play, the other being No. 1 Tennessee.
Darius Days also had one of his most productive games of the season, putting up 9 points and 8 rebounds, 7 of which came on the offensive side of the ball.
Waters did nothing short of carry the Tigers in the first half, tallying 23 of LSU’s 37 points in the period thanks to his shooting 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the 3-point line.
The rest of the team collectively shot 7 for 30 (23.3 percent) from the field with Naz Reid (0-for-5), Skylar Mays (0-for-8), Javonte Smart (0-for-5) and Emmitt Williams (0-for-1) shooting a combined 1-for-19 from the field in the first half.
Despite most of the team struggling to get on the board, LSU went to the break with a 37-36 lead thanks to Waters’ heroics.
Some of the other Tigers woke up in the second half, including Reid and Kavell Bigby-Williams who each finished the game with 7 points, all of which were scored in the second half.
Overall, LSU struggled offensively, shooting worse than 40 percent (37.1) for the second consecutive game. Waters was the only Tiger to finish earn a double-digit scoring tally.
The Tigers will return to the PMAC on Saturday for a rematch against Arkansas.
