Gavin Dugas out with torn ligament in thumb

Making his first career start, freshman infielder Gavin Dugas made a major statement in LSU’s first base conversation on Sunday.

Three days later LSU fears it may be without the rookie infielder for a large chunk of the season.

Nothing is conclusive yet, but an MRI revealed a torn ligament in Dugas’ thumb that’ll likely require surgery, LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. LSU is waiting on a second opinion before proceeding.

“That was really disappointing news today,” Mainieri said. “It’s not 100 percent conclusive yet, but we think he tore a ligament in his thumb that’ll need surgery to fix.”

If Dugas does indeed need surgery, he’d be out for eight weeks. Under that timetable, he’d be out until late April.

Dugas hurt his thumb when he slid into second base trying to stretch an RBI single into a double on Sunday. He played the rest of the game seemingly without incident.

Players had Monday off, so Mainieri didn’t even know Dugas was hurt until he saw him in the training room on Tuesday getting treatment on his hand. That prompted LSU to send him for an MRI Wednesday.

“The doctor that looked at the MRI results thinks its torn, but he wants to get another opinion from a radiologist,” Mainieri explained. “I’d say it’s like 98 percent sure. He just wanted to get verification.”

Fellow freshmen Cade Beloso and Drew Bianco have been LSU’s other first basemen this season, starting three of a possible seven games apiece. Saul Garza could also be an option at some point.
