COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The second-ranked Texas A&M Aggies defeated the 10th-ranked LSU Tigers, 6-1, to take Game 1 of the three-game series Thursday evening at Blue Bell Park.
The Tigers fell to 15-6 for the season and 1-3 in the SEC. The Aggies, who are 16-0 at home this season, improved to 20-2 and 3-1 in the league.
LSU left-hander Jared Poche’ (2-3) suffered the loss after giving up two runs in five innings of work. After giving up a run in the first and second innings, Poche’ rebounded to only allow two hits in his final three innings.
“I thought Jared Poche’ really battled, as he always does, and he kept us in the game,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of some of the scoring opportunities that we had and Texas A&M was ultimately able to extend their lead against our bullpen. We competed extremely hard, but we have to play better. There were a few key moments in the game where we fell short, and that proved to be the difference.”
Texas A&M’s Jace Vines moved to 4-0 on the season after allowing just one run on five hits in six innings of work. Vines struck out four and walked two in his outing.
Right-hander Brigham Hill entered the game in the seventh and held the Tigers scoreless to earn his first save of the season.

The Aggies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when leftfielder J.B. Moss singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on an infield single by second baseman Ryne Birk and scored on first baseman Hunter Melton’s sacrifice fly.
Texas A&M extended the lead to 2-0 in the second when catcher Michael Barash led off the inning with a walk and later scored from third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop George Janca.
LSU narrowed the deficit to 2-1 in the sixth when centerfielder Jake Fraley tripled and scored on a single by rightfielder Antoine Duplantis.
The Aggies, however, scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh against relievers Doug Norman and Parker Bugg, as third baseman Boomer White delivered an RBI single and rightfielder Nick Banks drew a bases-loaded walk.
Texas A&M added two runs in the eighth when Moss lined a run-scoring single and White contributed his second RBI hit of the contest.
