A year after claiming the Southeastern Conference’s regular-season title, the LSU football team was picked to finish third in the league’s preseason poll, the league office announced Tuesday.

The poll was voted on by a select panel of SEC and national media members, which placed the Tigers higher than they have in the short Will Wade era.

The Tigers — who are in their third year under Wade as head coach — finished last season with a 28-7 overall record and a 16-2 league record on their way to a conference title and a Sweet 16 berth.

The only two teams picked ahead of LSU in the poll were Kentucky, which topped the poll and Florida, one of just two SEC teams to beat LSU last season, and the only team to do so twice.

LSU senior guard Skylar Mays also earned a spot on the All-SEC Second Team, the only Tiger to earn preseason All-SEC honors.

Mays averaged 13.4 points per game last season as he helped lead the Tigers in a landmark year for the program.

He also enters the season on the as one of 20 athletes on the watch list for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.

LSU will start its season on Nov. 8 against Bowling Green in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
