Lutcher has had to live the past four years with losses to arch-rival St. James, three of which were decided by a total of 12 points.
When the Bulldogs crossed the Mississippi River bridge last Friday for the 12-mile trek to Vacherie for a renewal of their District 9-3A series, they certainly didn’t forget to pack their “Lunch’.
Lutcher quarterback D’Wanye “Lunch” Winfield put on a performance for the ages in a dominating 41-19 victory that is certain to become part of the lore surrounding the St. James Parish rivalry.
For his efforts Winfield, who accounted for 313 total yards, was selected the Tiger Rag Magazine/Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health Shining Star of the Week.
“We kind of think he’s flown under the radar over the 1½ years,” Lutcher head football coach Dwain Jenkins said. “We feel like this has become a norm for him week in and week out. It was amplified because of the stage we were on Friday.”
Winfield rushed 28 times for 263 yards and five touchdowns, part of a stretch over his last six games where Jenkins said his junior quarterback has rushed for just under 1,200 yards, passed for just under 750 and scored 27 TDs.
Part of the span includes Winfield rushing for a school-record 323 yards and 5 TDs in last year’s first-round Class 3A state playoff win over Grant.
Winfield scored three of his team’s first four touchdowns against St. James on scoring runs of 3, 5 and 40 yards in a 28-0 halftime lead. His 7-yard score in the third quarter provided Lutcher with a 28-12 lead after the Wildcats had closed to within a score.
“He’s the leader of our team,” Jenkins said of Winfield, who added a 1-yard TD in the fourth quarter. “I’ve told that to college coaches wanting to talk about him.”
