The longest tenured member of LSU’s coaching staff is leaving.
Renowned defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, a former LSU player who for the past 10 years has developed some of the nation’s top cornerbacks and safeties, reportedly will accept an offer to join the staff of new head coach Billy Napier at Florida.
Matt Zenith of On3.com reported Raymond is expected to become Florida’s assistant head coach for the defense in addition to coaching cornerbacks.
With Raymond apparently on his way out, LSU has moved to replace him according to a report from The Athletic where former Oklahoma and Notre Dame cornerbacks coach/co-defensive coordinator Kerry Cooks will join Brian Kelly’s coaching staff at LSU.
Raymond, a New Iberia native, was a three-year starter at LSU (1989-91) before going on to play in the NFL for six years with the New York Giants and Detroit Lions. He also coached defensive backs at both Utah State and Nebraska before returning to his alma mater in 2012. He added the title of recruiting coordinator in 2020.
During his 10-year stay in Baton Rouge, Raymond is credited for the defensive backfield’s ‘DBU’ persona that produced 14 players that went on to play in the NFL, 10 of which started with four of those reaching a Pro Bowl.
LSU featured seven players under Raymond’s tutelage that earned first-team All-America status is Eric Reid, Jalen Mills, Jamal Adams Tre’Davious White, Greedy Williams, Grant Delpit and Derek Stingley Jr.
Delpit was also a Jim Thorpe Award winner during the Tigers national championship season in 2019.
