LSU has continued to distinguish itself on the field with a 6-2 overall record and a share of the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division lead following last Saturday’s 45-20 victory over then seventh-ranked and previously unbeaten Ole Miss.
That momentum carried over to the recruiting trail four days later when the Tigers picked up a commitment from four-star linebacker Christian Brathwaite of Cypress Ranch in Houston.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Brathwaite, who committed to Baylor in January, switched his commitment Wednesday after making an unofficial visit to the LSU-Ole Miss game.
“100% committed,” Brathwaite said on his Twitter page.
Brathwaite’s commitment, the first for LSU since Neville offensive lineman Zalance Heard pledged Sept. 1, increased the Tigers number of commitments to 23 in the Class of 2023. They also moved up to No. 4 in the national rankings by On3.com, No. 6 by Rivals.com and remained No. 7 according to 247Sports.
“I’ve had an offer, I was just committed to Baylor,” Brathwaite told On3.com. “Out of respect for them, I didn’t post it. Coach Kelly is very humble and very faithful within his coaching. He believes in all his players and he’s willing to do anything to win and make anybody better.”
The addition of Brathwaite gives LSU a second linebacker in this current class, joining Whit Weeks of Watkinsville, Georgia. He’s ranked as high as the No. 19 linebacker by Rivals.com and 38th by On3, which also ranks him as the 70th best prospect in Texas.
Cypress Ranch is currently 6-2 with Brathwaite’s stats totaling 29 tackles, 9 TFLs and 3 sacks after four games. After an injury-filled 2021, he enjoyed his best season in 2020 with 38 tackles and 2 TFLs.
“(LSU defensive coordinator) Coach (Matt) House is a player’s guy. He coaches within the player,” Brathwaite said. “He is really interested in the player. He coaches each individual a certain way based off their certain skills based on developing them and getting them better.”
