LSU football began preparations for the Citrus Bowl knowing that one of its top wide receivers, Kayshon Boutte, would return and help lead the Tigers to a national championship in 2023.
Now he’ll have the guy that helped lead the Tigers to a 9-4 record, SEC Western Division title and Citrus Bowl on Jan. 2 against Purdue.
Junior quarterback Jayden Daniels, who has been in college a total of four years, decided Thursday to prolong his dreams of being an NFL quarterback to remain teammates with Boutte and be back with the Tigers for the 2023 season
Daniels, regarded as one of college football’s top dual-threat quarterbacks, announced his intentions on his Twitter page.
“This has been an amazing ride, I am not ready to get off just yet,” Daniels said. “I am returning for the 2023 season to fulfill the goal of an LSU Tiger and bring our fans another championship.”
Daniels spent the first three years of his career at Arizona State, where he earned his degree, before transferring to LSU and was named the team’s starter for the season opener with Florida State.
What transpired was a record-setting first season at LSU and Daniels established a single-season school record for rushing yards and touchdowns scored by a quarterback. He carried 180 times for 818 yards and scored 11 touchdowns, ranking second on the team in points scored with 66.
Daniels was the team’s leading rusher and completed 68% of his passes (254 of 373) for 2,774 yards with 16 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
Daniels’ 3,592 total yards rank second to only Joe Burrow (6,039) on the school’s single-season total yardage list. His per-game average of 276.3 is third best behind Burrow (402.6) and Rohan Davey (279.3).
He accounted for a school-record six touchdowns in a game decided in regulation in a 45-35 win over Florida, rushing for three TDs and passing for another three scores.
Daniels enjoyed a season-high 349 yards passing with three TDs against Florida and his 23 carries for 121 yards and three scores were a season’s best against in a 45-20 win over Ole Miss.
“From starting at Arizona State as a true freshman with a Hall of Fame head coach (Herm Edwards) to now playing in Death Valley in front of 102,000 fans screaming “LSU”, this has been an amazing ride,” Daniels said. “Through all of the ups and downs, I would not trade any of it because those moments built me into who I am today.”
