LSU lands fifth player from transfer portal in Texas A&M cornerback Denver Harris

LSU football coach Brian Kelly said after a 25-player high school haul on Wednesday, one that ranked as high as sixth nationally, the Tigers would remain vigilant on the recruiting trail for defensive linemen and defensive backs.

The Tigers can scratch one of those areas off their list with Thursday’s addition of former five-star cornerback Denver Harris of Texas A&M announced in a video on his Twitter page Wednesday that he was transferring to LSU. He made an official visit to Baton Rouge last weekend after entering the NCAA’s transfer portal.

Harris becomes the fifth player from the transfer portal to sign with LSU and first defensive back. He joins a group of players that also includes wide receiver/return specialist Aaron Anderson of Alabama, edge rusher Bradyn Swinson of Oregon and defensive linemen Paris Shand of Arizona and Jalen Lee of Florida.

Kelly said he’ll release all of LSU’s signees from the transfer portal on Friday.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Harris was considered one of the crown jewels in the Class of 2022 out of Houston’s North Shore High School where he was the District 21-6A Defensive Player of the Year. He received five-star status from Rivals.com and a four-star rating from both 247Sports and ESPN after earning first team All-American honors from MaxPreps.com.

According to On3Sports’ composite rankings, Harris was the nation’s No. 23 overall player and No. 3 cornerback.

Harris, who received more than 40-plus scholarship offers and was a 2022 Under Armour All-American, signed with Texas A&M over LSU and Alabama where he spent his freshman season until being suspended indefinitely from the team after five games.

He played more than 200-plus snaps over that span, registering 14 tackles and breaking up three passes, and was one of the highest rated freshman cornerbacks in the country until that point of the year.

Harris’ arrival is much welcomed after LSU lost out on the services of five-star cornerback Desmond Ricks of IMG Academy to Alabama.
