The No. 7 LSU women’s basketball can equal the best start in school history with a home game Thursday at 8 p.m. against Texas A&M in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Tigers are 14-0 overall and 2-0 in SEC play and need a win over the Aggies (5-7, 0-2) to match the 15-0 record of the 2002-03 team which was the freshman season of future All-American Seimone Augustus.
The game will be televised by the SEC Network and broadcast locally by 107.3-FM.
“We’re not good enough to look past anybody,” LSU coach Kim Mulkey said. “We are still a work in progress. We’re a very talented team, but we haven’t done anything yet.”
LSU has opened conference play in dominating fashion with a 69-45 road win over Arkansas and followed that up Sunday, defeating Vanderbilt at home, 88-63.
Maryland transfer forward Angel Reese has posted 14 double-doubles in every game this season and is the only player in the SEC to average more than 20 points scoring (23.9) and more than 10 rebounds (14.9).
Senior guard Alexis Morris averages 13.4 points and 5.0 assists, including 12 against Vanderbilt, while the SEC’s reigning Freshman of the Week, Flau’jae Johnson, also averages 13.4 points. Graduate transfer guard Jasmine Carson averages 11.6 points and leads the team with 30 3-point baskets made.
Texas A&M is under the guidance of first year coach Joni Taylor, the former coach at Georgia, who replaced Hall of Fame coach Gary Blair. The Aggies feature the league’s second-youngest roster with only eight available players led by freshman Janiah Barker (12.1 points).
“She (Coach Taylor) will probably tell you that it is going to take her some time to build at (Texas) A&M what she built at Georgia,” Mulkey said.
