LSU officially opened up Fall Camp Thursday morning with the “veteran” group going through the first of four split-squad workouts. Here’s some observations and takeaways from the offense during the morning session.

  1. Colby is back and kickin’

Kicker Colby Delahoussaye was out on the back practice field during the open portion of practice kicking field goals.

Les Miles said Wednesday he expected Delahoussaye to be able to start kicking as early as today after sustaining burns on the back of his left leg — his plant leg — from a fiery car crash that killed two in Wisconsin. Cameron Gamble was also kicking, along with new long snapper Blake Ferguson.

  1. Maea absent

Left tackle Maea Teuhema, who Miles said Wednesday had a sprained ankle, was the most notable absence from the morning session. Teuhema was sporting a walking boot on his left foot when he arrived Wednesday morning to report for camp.

K.J. Malone occupied the left tackle spot when LSU briefly lined up. Miles characterized Teuhema’s injury as not appearing “significant.”

While Teuhema was absent, both Ethan Pocic and Will Clapp were full participants after undergoing offseason surgeries. Fullback J.D. Moore also participated fully after a knee injury ended his 2015 season.

  1. Wideout Watch

Travin Dural, who tore his hamstring last season, was a full participant with the wide receivers as they ran through the gauntlet drill.

The other receivers running with the veteran group were Malachi Dupre, D.J. Chark, Derrick Dillon, Russell Gage and walk-on Jalen Williams, who used to play baseball in the Boston Red Sox organization.

  1. Freshmen Counter

– The oldest Tiger in uniform was also one of the few freshmen who worked with the offense during the morning session. Tight end Zach Von Rosenberg, the former Zachary baseball star, worked with Colin Jeter, Foster Moreau and DeSean Smith at the tight end spot.

– Redshirt-freshmen Caleb Lewis was one of three quarterbacks, joining Brandon Harris and Danny Etling.

  1. Moment of Levity

During the gauntlet drill, tight ends coach and former LSU quarterback Steve Ensminger misfired on a throw. Miles, always one for jokes, called out Ensminger “Did you ever play quarterback before? That’s the worst throw I’ve ever seen!”

Laughs were had. That helps when its 90-someodd degrees on an August morning in Louisiana.
