Call it a marble game. Call it what you want.
Bottom line for Tennessee and LSU, one team is going home on Tuesday night, the other is moving on.
To win a national championship, LSU must put together five wins over a six-day span.
It all starts for Jay Johnson’s No. 5 seeded LSU team by winning today against Tennessee, then the Tigers get a rematch against No. 1 seeded Wake Forest on Wednesday. Beat Tennessee, beat Wake Forest, then what? Then, beat Wake Forest again to move into the CWS Finals.
In other words, LSU has its work clearly laid out before it.
Tonight, Tennessee is expected to start sophomore right-hander Drew Beam (9-4, 3.78 ERA). A Sunday starter for most of the season, Bream faced LSU on April 1 but did not get a decision in the 14-7 win to avoid the sweep. The sophomore right-hander gave up six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work, but only one run was earned. He struck out four and did not walk any. Oh, and Tennessee jumped out to a 10-0 lead in that game. Kind of changes the way you pitch when you’re working from an 10-run lead.
Who LSU starts remained a mystery on Monday night. Nine of LSU’s 11 pitchers are available, according to Johnson with Paul Skenes and Ty Floyd being the only two Tigers’ hurlers not available. But who Johnson and (Wes) Johnson call on is merely speculation right now.
Whoever starts for LSU, probably Riley Cooper, expect the Tigers to use several pitchers throughout the game playing matchups on literally a batter per batter, situational, basis.
It's Game Day
