The top two-ranked women in the United States in the 100 meters, both of whom are former LSU standouts, advanced Thursday to the semifinals of the USA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Sha’Carri Richardson, the No. 2 ranked runner, won her heat with a world’s best time of 10.71 seconds followed by Aleia Hobbs, the No. 1 ranked runner, with a time of 11.11 seconds.
Semifinal action continues at the University of Oregon’s Heyward Field.
Five other former LSU athletes also advanced to the semifinal round in their respective events.
Terrance Laird had the seventh fastest time of 10.07 in the 100 meters, Vernon Norwood ran the second fastest time of 45.06 in the 400 and Noah Williams was right behind at 45.85.
Charlene Lipsey was third in the 800 (2:00.10) and javelin thrower Rebekah Wales also moved on to the semis in her specialty with an effort of 177 feet, 4 inches for fourth place.
Reigning NCAA 800-meter champion Michaela Rose was seventh in her event (2:00.79) and Da’Marcus Fleming also advanced in the 100 (10.70).
