Gymnastics steady at No. 2 nationally ahead of huge weekend

BATON ROUGE – Heading into one of the most anticipated regular season matchups of the season in NCAA gymnastics, the LSU Tigers are ranked No. 2 in the RoadToNationals.com rankings released Monday.

The Tigers defeated No. 23 Arkansas on Friday with a team score of 197.700. The team averaged moved to 197.579 for the second-best in the country behind Oklahoma at 197.813. LSU will face off with the top-ranked Sooner as well as No. 10 Georgia and No. 15 Missouri in St. Louis on Friday.

LSU earned its 14th-straight team score of 197 or better Friday night in the win over the Razorback to move to 6-0 overall. The 197 tied the school record for consecutive meets with a 197 originally set by the 2014-15 squads.

Florida ranks third in the country behind Oklahoma and LSU with an average of 197.521. National rankings are based on a team’s overall season average for the first few weeks of the season before switching to the regional qualifying score (RQS).

LSU ranks second in the nation on both floor and beam with averages of 49.483 and 49.400 respectively. Senior Ashleigh Gnat ranks third on floor. Freshman Kennedi Edney and sophomore McKenna Kelley also rank in the top-25 at No. 14 and No. 20 respectively.

Three Tigers own spots in the top-25 on beam with junior Myia Hambrick at No. 5, Edney at No. 19 and Gnat at No. 20.

Gnat ranks as the top gymnast in the country on vault with an average of 9.933. Edney ranks 16th and sophomore Lexie Priessman is at No. 23 for the No. 3 vault team in the country.

The Tigers are No. 4 overall on bars. Priessman (10th), Sarah Finnegan (16th), Edney (18th) and Harrold (23rd) all own spots in the top-25 on the event.

LSU competes in a doubleheader this weekend on the road and at home. The Tigers will travel to St. Louis to take on Oklahoma, Georgia and Missouri at 6:30 p.m. CT Friday. The squad will then return home to face off against George Washington and Iowa at 2:30 p.m. CT Sunday.
