The first major recruiting domino of the Will Wade era at LSU has fallen in the Tigers’ favor.
Four-star power forward Mayan Kiir will sign with LSU in the spring signing period that begins Wednesday, his high school coach told The Advocate.
A 6-foot-10, 220 pound prospect from Victory Rock Prep in Bradenton, Fla., Kiir originally signed with Wade at VCU in the fall but asked and received a release when Wade took the LSU job. He’d included LSU among his finalists prior to the program’s regime change.
“We’re going to LSU,” his high school coach Loren Jackson told The Advocate. “We have a great relationship with coach Wade, and (Kiir) felt very comfortable during the earlier process with (Wade) in terms of his style of play and his discipline. We actually visited LSU last fall, so it was nothing new. LSU was on his original list, and we felt like it was a good fit. Coming in with a new coach helps, because he’s one of (Wade’s) guys.”
Kiir is ranked the No. 95 prospect in the 2017 class, according to ESPN. He, like current Tiger Duop Reath, is a South Sudanese native, and he should provide instant size in LSU’s front court. He averaged 13.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season at Victory Rock.
The addition of Kiir gives LSU three signees in 2017, alongside guard Brandon Rachal and wing Galen Alexander. The Tigers have no more scholarships to offer in the mean time, although if Antonio Blakeney declares for the NBA Draft and/or a current player decides to transfer, Wade could have some roster flexibility.
