LSU will take the field in Omaha on Saturday, but purple and gold baseball will be played even sooner — and for a more consequential cause.
In the wake of a shooting which injured Louisiana congressman and majority whip Steve Scalise, the university sent official gear to Washington D.C., which participants will wear in tomorrow’s congressional baseball game.
Scalise suffered injuries during a Wednesday morning practice session for the annual game, a charitable contest which has taken place for more than a century. He graduated from LSU in 1989.

Four others were injured in Wednesday’s shooting. Scalise remains in critical condition after surgery, according to a statement from his office.
