LSU basketball landed a coup Friday when five-star Baton Rouge point guard Javonte Smart committed to the Tigers.

The 2018 prospect from Scotlandville High School is No. 11 in the Rivals 150, making him the highest-ranked Baton Rouge player to head to LSU, should his commitment stick, since Brandon Bass in 2003.

His high school coach, Carlos Sample, joined me on After Further Review on Friday to discuss the news.

On Javonte’s recruitment…

“When he’s at Scotlandville, he’s at his safe haven. I’m not a big fan of a lot of traffic coming through. We want to let him be a kid and enjoy his high school days and not always get caught up in the hoop-la of recruiting.”

On his first impressions of Javonte…

“I’ve seen Javonte since he was in sixth grade at Scotlandville Middle Magnet. He stood out amongst everybody. I thought he was an 8th grader, and he was a 6th grader. Since then, his game has just risen year after year. He’s become a complete player, a great student, with a great attitude as well.”

On what made LSU stand out amongst the other schools recruiting Javonte…

“Coach Wade, we share the same philosophy, the style of play to fit his game. Also, it’s home. There’s no place like home. LSU is a great institution to go to school to further his academic and athletic career.”

On Will Wade…

“I’ve known Coach Wade for a minute. When he was at VCU, he recruited Damean Jones, who just won a ring at Golden State, who played at Scotlandville, as well as LaMarcus Lee, when (Wade) was at Chattanooga. Just the type of person Coach Wade is, he’s a better person. He’s a great coach, but an even better person. It’s a win win for LSU. Javonte is going to someone who has family values and will show him accountability and take his game to another level.”
