LSU’s first weekly SEC honor of the season goes to one of its many first-time starters.
Left guard Garrett Brumfield earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday, after the junior helped pave the way for the Tigers’ 294 rushing yards in Saturday’s 27-0 win over BYU.
Brumfield, a Baton Rouge native, graded out at 86 percent, the highest among LSU’s starting line, according to the SEC’s release, and picked up 12 knockdowns – nine more than he registered in 150 snaps all of last season.
The Tigers’ dominance on the ground helped LSU out-possess BYU 42 minutes to 18, and Jeff Grimes’ unit did not allow a sack all game. Just three times did the Tigers lose yardage on plays against a BYU defense that ranked ninth nationally a year ago in rushing defense. LSU’s backs averaged more than 5 yards per carry, up from the 3.40 the Cougars allowed a season ago.
