At least for now, LSU coach Ed Orgeron seems perfectly fine with his rookie tandem at right guard.
True freshman Saahdiq Charles got the start against BYU but fellow freshman Ed Ingram rotated in for entire drives at a time. They’re listed as co-starters at the position on LSU’s official depth chart.
The coach was asked on the SEC Coaches Teleconference Wednesday if he’d like to settle on either Charles or Ingram handling the position.
“Both of those guys are doing very well,” Orgeron said. “Obviously were very thin on the offensive line, but we want to keep those guys healthy … I just want to continue to let those two guys continue at left guard. I consider both of them a starter.”
Charles and Ingram were two of 17 true freshmen to play in LSU’s season-opening 27-0 drubbing of BYU, which tied for the highest total in the nation.
Orgeron hinted that JaCoby Stevens, the highest-regarded of LSU’s 2017 signees, would become No. 18 this Saturday as the Tigers take on UT-Chattanooga in their home opener at Tiger Stadium. Stevens made the switch from safety to wide receiver during preseason camp.
“We plan on most of our guys playing,” Orgeron said. “We talked about it today: we want to get JaCoby Stevens more in the mix. He’s got some things that he can do on offense. I think you’re going to see more of him this week.”
Including Stevens, only seven of LSU’s 24 eligible 2017 signees didn’t see the field in the Superdome. Nose tackle Tyler Shelvin is the lone ineligible rookie due to only receiving a partial NCAA clearance.
Is it possible that every eligible freshmen plays some time this season?
“No question, there’s a chance,” Orgeron said.
