Danny Etling will start at quarterback against Mississippi State — this time it’s official.

Les Miles confirmed as much Friday in a video interview posted on the school’s official website. Miles has hinted at the news all week, but always prefaced with a qualifier like “I guess” or “I would imagine.”

“I would say that that is still the case,” Miles said, asked if Etling would get the nod. “You know what? It’s hard for me to prematurely … I just want you to know, Danny will take the first snap, but I hold the right to make that decision any time I want to.”

The news hardly comes as a surprise one week after Etling replaced incumbent Brandon Harris, who led a sputtering offense to all of one offensive score in five uninspiring quarters of football.

Etling, a Perdue transfer who sat out last season under NCAA rules, entered and led the offense on three consecutive touchdown drives. Now he’ll face a Mississippi State defense led by reigning SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week A.J. Jefferson.

“I think Danny can handle the place and the stage and playing in a televised game in Tiger Stadium,” Miles said in the video, which was recorded after LSU finished practice on Thursday night.
