NFLSU: How former LSU players fared in the NFL’s Week 2

Former LSU safety Grant Delpit sparkled in his NFL debut with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday after missing his entire rookie season in 2020 with a torn Achilles.

It took almost 1½ years for former LSU safety Grant Delpit to play in his first NFL game.

Delpit, chosen No. 44 overall in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, missed his entire true rookie season with an Achilles tear.

Then, he was held out of last Sunday’s 2021 opener with a hamstring injury.

But Sunday in a 31-21 Browns’ victory over the Houston Texans, Delpit was turned loose in three-safety sets that included Cleveland starters Ronnie Harrison Jr. and John Johnson III.  He had five tackles (three solo) and he collected his first sack as a pro.

“I thought that was great,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said of Delpit’s sack. “It was good to see from him to get some reps, first time out there playing, to make a big play when we needed it. I thought he did a nice job. We will have to grow that role as we go.”

Delpit got his sack on the Texans’ final drive near the end of the game. He was unblocked on an edge blitz, leveling Texans QB Davis Mills who barely held on to the ball.  Two plays later, the Texans settled for and missed a field goal attempt.

“I’m blessed by God, man,” Delpit said. “It was a great feeling. We got a good win and I’m glad I could contribute to the win.”
