LSU managed to salvage a down-and-up National Signing Day by landing one of the nation’s elite pass catchers.
Five-star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase picked the Bayou Bengals over finalist Auburn at a signing ceremony at Archbishop Rummel in Metairie on Wednesday afternoon.
Adding Chase helps take the sting out of missing out on two blue chip cornerbacks, five-star Patrick Surtain Jr. and four-star Mario Goodrich, on Wednesday morning. He joins four-star safety Kelvin Joseph as signees Nos. 22 and 23 of a class that’ll almost certainly finish below the 25-player limit.
Chase has been the operative word through what has been a roller coaster recruitment for the talented pass catcher, but LSU has seemingly taken a commanding lead late in the process on the former Kansas and Florida pledge. Chase took official visits to both LSU and Auburn in recent weeks before announcing them as his two finalists.
Adding Chase puts the finishing touch on a monster wide receiver haul that already includes five-star early enrollee Terrace Marshall. Both freshmen could contribute from day one as new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger has promised an offense that’ll feature four-receiver sets, and Ensminger has said that he sees the receiver spot as the strength of the roster.
It also caps off a strong cycle of in-state recruiting. Bringing Chase and Joseph on board means LSU will sign eight of the top 10 players in Louisiana for 2018, according to 247Sports. Ed Orgeron and Co. now need to carry that momentum into a 2019 cycle that’s supposedly loaded with in-state talent.
